A series of fabric installations with state of the art lighting systems to enhance the space

The shopping centre at Kingswalk, Gloucester, has never been short of customers, and positioned on the main high street the area is in a prime location for catching the eye of shoppers. However, looking run down and tired, the centre needed a make over to reflect its important position as the main arrival path from the city’s bus station and one of the city’s top shopping destinations!

Working closely with managers Pearce Retail Services, Architen Landrell set about to smarten and brighten up the space without breaking the bank or closing the centre! The additions included three fabric features – a PVC coated polyester entrance canopy, a series of silicon glass mesh barrel vaults and a collection of hypars suspended from the atrium ceiling. However, the real transformation of the space lay in the lighting scheme designed and implemented by Architen Lighting.

The external PVC entrance canopy was designed to create maximum visual impact and is lit with 10 three way 1W Luxeon LED projectors to encourage people to take a look inside.

After entering the centre, shoppers find themselves under a fabric ceiling that forms a 100m fabric clad tunnel lit with a series of extruded strips of colour-changing LEDs running down both sides. The effect is to create a spacey, undulating wash of gently colour-changing pastel hues along the walkway.

The end of the corridor opens out into a high vaulted ceiling filled with tensioned sails with colour changing LED lighting to create a subtle colour-changing wash effect.

The colour changing lighting with its remote diagnostic system is what makes the shopping centre stand out from the crowd – now smartened up and glowing from the inside out, both visitors and shoppers enjoy the experience of shopping at Kingswalk Shopping Centre.
