The external facade of Palace Exchange shopping centre is lit using colour changing LED lighting

A key feature of the 160,000 square foot Palace Exchange Shopping Centre is the Enfield Word Wall. Measuring approximately 120m long, the wall dominates the northern side of the development, featuring passages of past and present conversation from the town.

The design was completed by Portland Design, with the concept of gently backlighting the wall behind the large text, whilst simultaneously illuminating the front with LED projectors, creating the effects of contrasting hues of colour moving across the facade. The control system is programmed to run a series of colour sequences and shows. So on special days such as St. Valentines or Christmas Day, the lighting can change accordingly.

A total of more than one hundred lengths of Tryka colour changing LED strips were used for backlighting. Sixteen Color Kinetics ColorBlast 12’s were positioned on the opposite buildings to project a spot of colour onto the facade of the word wall. Six in-ground LED floods were installed in the base of the ground, first and second levels of the stair well.

Over 4,500 Luxeon LEDs were used in the installation, with every one of these LEDs being controlled from a single LPC1 Pharos DMX controller. The whole installation was completed smoothly and swiftly in two weeks, including the programming of the custom-built DMX control system.

The LPC1 is linked into the shopping centre’s local computer network, allowing the customer to make any changes it requires. This also allows the control system to report any diagnostic faults directly back to our offices.

The installation of the lighting on the Word Wall marries up with the installation completed in 2006 for the bridge that links the shopping centre to a multi story car park, easily bringing the total number for LEDs installed on site to over 6,000!
